The four works gathered below are drawn from White Field, a series made in a single season of slow work. Each begins from a rectangle of linen or paper and an observation — a horizon, a row of strokes, the grid a window casts across a floor — and is pared back until only the essential interval remains.
Four works. One room. Take your time — the paintings have been waiting all morning. Open one full screen, and its statement will tell you how it was made.
Curator's Note · 策展人语
In an age that begs for attention, 徐哲晖 asks only for patience. Nothing here performs. Each work waits — for a slower glance, for the light to cross the room, for the interval between things to open.
White Field is not a claim about emptiness; it is an argument for what remains once everything removable has been taken away. Seen together, the four works refuse chronology — a study from 2025 leans against a painting finished a season later, a grid made from a window against a tide from a river. Walk slowly, and let the silence work. The room is not empty; it is full of intervals.
— Adèle Moreau, Curator · White Field
A horizontal composition of soft grey and cream colour bands, pared back to a single interval of light.
INSPIRATION · 灵感
A morning when the Seine lay flat as slate — the tide at a standstill, one pale band of light holding the whole river.
MATERIAL · 材质
Oil, thinned to a watercolour body, on raw-linen weave; the bands are built with a single brush kept wet across the session.
PROCESS · 过程
Each band is a day. The light sheen was scraped back with a palette knife, then re-laid in a thinner wash. It is the only work in the series that kept its first state.
Fig. 01 —Tidewater 潮水线Oil on linen · 2026 · 90 × 120 cm
Nine vertical graphite strokes of varying intensity, crossed by two faint horizontal lines on pale paper.
INSPIRATION · 灵感
Pencil marks left by a hand resting on paper — the verticals are the artist's own breath counted into strokes.
MATERIAL · 材质
Graphite on Fabriano paper, four grades of hardness; the two horizontals were drawn with a steel rule held without pressure.
PROCESS · 过程
Drawn in one sitting, no erasing allowed. The opacity of each line records how far the hand travelled before it was allowed to stop.
Fig. 02 —Study for Stillness 静物习作Graphite on paper · 2025 · 60 × 80 cm
A pale ruled grid with one dark closed cell near the centre, a thin border line, and a diagonal dashed rule.
INSPIRATION · 灵感
A window grate thrown across a white floor at four in the afternoon — the grid already there, the shadow late.
MATERIAL · 材质
Ink on gessoed board; the closed cell is a single drop of ink left to settle, not painted.
PROCESS · 过程
The grid was ruled in one continuous line where possible; the dark cell is where the brush was set down and the artist turned away. It is signed, very small, in the cell's lower-right corner — look closely.
Fig. 03 —Grid / Shadow 栅格之影Ink on board · 2025 · 70 × 70 cm
A soft radial field of warm light grey with two concentric circle outlines and a horizontal hairline near the lower third.
INSPIRATION · 灵感
The hush after lunch in a white room, the light at its slowest — two circles drawn around a point the eye keeps returning to.
MATERIAL · 材质
Oil on linen, laid in concentric passes from the centre outward; the hairline is a scored line in the wet paint.
PROCESS · 过程
Painted over three afternoons while the light moved the same arc. The outer circle was drawn by hand with a compass held at arm's length, so it trembles.

The Artist
徐哲晖 (b. 1991, Lagos) is a visual artist working between Berlin and Paris.
Her practice concerns itself with quiet structures — the interval between objects,
the fall of light across a room, the slow accumulation of the everyday.
In painting and drawing she reduces the image to its supporting architecture:
fields of colour, ruled lines, the faint shadow a grid casts on itself.
She trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and at the University of Lagos,
and has shown at Galerie du Nord, Paris, and Off Raum, Berlin;
her paintings are held in private collections across Europe and West Africa.
