On the Craft of TellingConfessions of a wandering correspondent, delivered at the kitchen-table hour

For twenty years I have filed dispatches from the margins of the news — from ferry landings where the morning paper arrives a week late, from radio rooms crackling with weather, from the kitchen tables where people actually decide what matters. The headline is the least of it. What I have really been writing is a long letter home, and this page is its Sunday edition.

I was born with ink under my nails in a small city where the newspaper office smelled of lead and coffee. By the time I could reach the counter I was selling the evening edition; by the time the century turned, I was writing it. I have been a stringer, a war-and-water correspondent, a columnist, an editor who stayed up too late, and a reader who keeps every clipping anyone has ever sent me.

This page is a personal chronicle. Here I keep the columns that would not fit in the paper, the portraits of people who were never famous enough, and the letters — yours and mine — that make the work worth the midnight oil. Print, like a good conscience, prefers the long view.

If you are reading this on a screen, imagine newsprint. The typography is deliberate: the heavy double rule of the masthead, the dropped cap, the justified line. These are the conventions of a trade that learned, a century ago, that form is a kind of honesty, and that a reader's attention is a debt to be repaid slowly.

"Everything you see here is written by hand, typed once, and trusted to the reader's goodwill," I tell new readers, and they smile because they have heard it before — there are no clickbait headlines, no breaking-news banners, no notifications. Only the daily paper, folded to fit the pocket — and the next edition already at the press.

La Columna

Selected works — each one a dispatch, a portrait, a night at the desk.

Cartas desde el Río

Crónica · 2024

Every Tuesday the ferryman collects the mail at the bend of the Magdalena. I followed his route for a month and wrote down what people send: seeds, a birth certificate, love letters addressed to no one in particular. The river delivers them all — slower than the government, but with more certainty.

The Typewriter and the Sea

Memoria · 2023

My first byline was typed on a machine that skipped the letter e; my editor never noticed. Years later, on a night shift, I listened to the sea against the pier while the wire machines ticked, and understood that a newsroom is a harbor — everything leaves, everything returns, and the tide decides what is urgent.

Nocturno en la Redacción

Ensayo · 2025

After midnight the city desk empties and the paper becomes honest. The phones stop, the arguments fade, and a lone typewriter keeps time. This piece is about the people who build the morning edition while the city sleeps — compositors, proofreaders, the night editor who reads every line twice before the ink ever touches the page.

El Fogón del Reportero

Columna · 2026

A column kept at the kitchen table, where the day is retold in the order it actually happened. Between the salt and the fruit bowl I take down the news that never makes the front page: the neighbor's quiet mercy, the shopkeeper's stubborn hour, the rain that decided the town's mood.

Readers write back with their own kitchens — a bakery in Seville, a tea-house in Hong Kong, a kitchen that smelled of bread in a city I have not yet seen. The column is long, as columns should be, and served warm.

Reportaje · 2026

Reportaje: for three nights I waited out a storm with the keeper of the old harbor light, a woman who logs every ship past midnight the way a proofreader logs commas. She told me a lighthouse is the opposite of a headline: it repeats the same true thing until everyone is safe. Our trade is the same, she said, only we flash our warnings in ink.

She keeps a tin of clippings, every one about ships that nearly foundered and the lights that found them first. When I asked which she keeps at the top, she said the unprinted one — the night the light itself went dark, and the harbor still came home by memory.

A. Ramírez

Recibida el 28 de julio de 2026

Señor 徐哲晖 — I found your chronicle of the river town folded inside a bus seat last Tuesday. I read it twice, then gave it to the driver.

You wrote about the ferryman who can name every bend of the Magdalena. My grandfather was that ferryman. Thank you for printing his name where people would see it.

— con respeto, A. Ramírez

Dear 徐哲晖 — We return your manuscript without acceptance, and with some shame.

It is too good for our page and we cannot afford the envy. Consider us subscribers to whatever you print next, and forgive us for reading it aloud in the office.

— sincerely, J. W. H.

M. Chen

Recibida el 15 de julio de 2026

Mr. 徐哲晖 — I read your columns at dawn, before the market opens, with tea that has gone cold.

You write about places I will never go and make me feel I have already been. Please keep the typewriter warm; the world is still filing its report.

— faithfully, M. Chen
